2001-2004 Hyundai Elantra Car Review

Overall Rating 2 Stars
Description
Elantra is a bigger and more convincing choice than the elderly Accent, but it's still mediocre. Although good value and reasonably well-built, it offers no fun and no feel-good factor.

Hyundai Elantra (2001-04)
Road Test
Elantra comes as a five-door hatchback or four-door saloon. It's usefully family-sized but is usually bought by elderly empty-nesters attracted by its good value for money, conservative styling and cabins, lack of complex gadgets and generally good durability. Hyundai dealers are also noted for their good after-sales service. But if you're looking for a rewarding drive, look elsewhere. Offered with 1.6 or 2.0 litre petrol engines, or a 2.0-litre diesel, the Elantra is neither slow nor sporty. All the engines are loud and get thrashy when pushed, and none are particularly economical. Although it's more refined than the Accent, Elantra's sound insulation is not great. The ride can be poor over rough surfaces, and the seats are unsupportive. Elantra is cheap, and it feels it. Any money saved at purchase will be lost in depreciation come resale time. An all-new model is due soon, which promises to be far better.
Positive Points
  • Inexpensive family runabout; low used prices
  • Lots of equipment for the money
  • Long warranty; proving reliable so far
Negative Points
  • Engines are neither lively nor refined
  • Another Hyundai let down by cheap interior trim
  • Heavy depreciation if bought new
